Variant Covers have at times critisized for being mostly gimmicks. However, many times those gimmicks have proved popular with fans and collectors. In the 90s in particular many covers were sold with a type of gimmick All kinds of things were used in the 90s: die cut, embossing, foil, holograms, and sometimes just a random change like a different character added.
Recently the Lenticular covers have made a comeback.

Valiant decided to have some fun with this. As part of the promotion for Quaunto and Woody #1 a very rare and special variant will be released that is said to feature the most Variant Cover gimmicks ever!!!!!!!!!

I actually really want this book but seeing how rare it is my guess is that it will cost quite a bit.
