If I told you that the most recent episode of NBC's Superstore was all about the power of friendship, would you believe me? Probably not, but I'm partially right. "Brett is Dead" saw the employees of Cloud Nine reconsider (or maybe just straight up lie about) the friendships between them.
The episode began with a short memorial for Brett (Jon Miyahara), complete with a sad, yet hilarious in context ukelele cover of Radiohead's Creep courtesy of Sandra (Kaliko Kauahi). Despite it revolving around a memorial service taking place in the rain, the cold open was hilarious. Dina (Lauren Ash)'s descriptions of all the ways Brett could have died as a result of the tornado (they never found a body), contrasted with Glenn (Mark McKinney)'s overenthusiastic insistence that Brett is still alive, made for some pitch-perfect comedy.
After the opening theme, the episode split off into three plotlines.
Jonah (Ben Feldman), having been living with Garrett (Colton Dunn) for some time now, insists that he and Garrett are good friends. However, he is insecure in the fact that he doesn't know how Garrett ended up in his wheelchair, and is too afraid to ask. Jonah's various maneuvers throughout the episode made for some great laughs. I especially loved when he asked Myrtle (Linda Porter) about Garrett's disability, and Myrtle went off onto a very strange tangent that got bleeped out near the end. It was hilarious, if a bit awkward to watch at times, if you're as prone to secondhand embarrassment as I am.
Meanwhile, Glenn mistakenly assumes that Mateo (Nico Santos) and Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom) are too broken up about Brett's absence to work. Using his Glenn's ignorance, Mateo and Cheyenne pretend that they were extremely close to Brett in order to get out of their work. However, this quickly backfires on them when Glenn tries to write a tribute for Brett for the sore's newspaper. He asks them questions about Brett's life, and they give him some pretty obviously terrible answers. My favorites include them telling him that Brett's wife's name was "Cinnamon Margaret" and that Brett was a cowboy trick rider with a horse named "Cloud Tie".
Amy: “I’m so sad I don’t get a spot in your little masturbation jail”Absolute gold. I also loved the more dramatic part of the storyline, where Dina finally showed some vulnerability and opened up about her many, many traumas tracing back to the beginning (along with her feelings on the whole Tanya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan debacle).
Dina: “All jails are masturbation jails!”
Dina: I'm pretty sure Nancy Kerrigan hit herself in the leg.Despite my love for the Amy and Dina plot, my second favorite scene definitely came from that part in the break room where everyone discussed their traumas. The entire break room block was funny in general, but something about the Sandra/Carol (Irene White) always makes me smile. That, when paired with Glenn's general obliviousness, makes for some great comedy.
Carol: My worst trauma was when Sandra tried to murder me during a tornado. But if we're counting down, the absolute best part of the episode was the end reveal that Brett was actually alive. Apparently, as the tornado was coming, he just got in his car and drove away. Meanwhile, the store had simply been sending emails to the wrong person this whole time, so Brett didn't know that he was supposed to come back.
Sandra: I didn’t try to murder you. [smirk.] I just didn’t try to save you.
Glenn: I love your friendship!
Personally, I am so happy that Brett is alive. The fact that this was revealed in an episode called "Brett is Dead" just reminds me how much I love Superstore in general. This episode was a good one, and I'm excited to see where Superstore goes with its great trajectory thus far.
