Hey everyone. Captain Sean here with a review for one of the newest original super hero cartoons out there: Miraculous. For those that don’t know: Miraculous is a slightly less conventional super hero series about two young teenagers living in Paris who obtain super powers and fight supernatural evil forces that threaten the famous city. The two teenagers include – Marinette: a young teen girl with a love for fashion that transforms into the lucky charm wielding heroine Ladybug, and Adrien: a young teen guy who is a professional fashion model that transforms into the smooth talking and power packed feline fighter Cat Noir. The series focuses on the imaginative fantastical adventures that these two teens have, but also gives equal focus to their regular and more relatable daily lives.

Now the first thing that has to be really analyzed with this series are its’ characters. Now Marinette and Adrien concept-wise alone are pretty simple people. There’s not much complexity to them and you pretty much completely get who they are within just a few minutes of any episode. But it’s how the show uses these two simple characters is what makes it work. First off: Marinette in particular is a very expressive character that gets highly emotional at times in all sorts of highly entertaining ways. And then of course there’s the unconventional romance story in this series. You see: Marinette and Adrien both don’t know the other has two identities. And what makes that fun is: Marinette has a major crush on Adrien, but Adrien only views Marinette as a friend. Meanwhile however: Adrien as Cat Noir has strong romantic feelings for Ladybug, but Marinette as Ladybug has no romantic interest in Cat Noir. And… that’s actually a pretty entertaining concept by itself. Seriously, the concept of someone liking one of a super hero’s identities but not the other has been done many times. It all started with the love triangle of Superman/Clark Kent experiencing a romantic triangle for two with Lois Lane. However this show creates a pretty crazy romantic… square with Marinette/Ladybug, and Adrien/ Cat Noir. The way the two are both unknowingly self-sabotaging their potential romance with the other is a hysterical concept.

Now all of the separate concepts that go into this show are a little less unique. However these less unique concepts are surprisingly blended uniquely though. The super hero’s body suits, weapons, villains they have to fight, and battle scenarios are clearly inspired by Japanese super hero shows such as Super Sentai. However the super hero masks and the heroes’ need to hide their secret identities are clearly inspired by American super heroes. In
particular: the series desire to focus on teenage super hero stories that don’t forget to focus on the super hero’s ordinary life and relatable things they go through is clearly inspired by the Spider-man franchise. However the settings and specific style of the hero and villain suits definitely have that French style. The whole look and feel of the show definitely feels like a hybrid of American and Japanese super hero concepts being mixed in with some French flavor.

Now the series is pretty formulaic at times… actually almost all of the time. Except for the Origins two-parter (which wasn’t even aired first for some strange reason) each episode starts with Marinette and/or Adrien dealing with everyday life problems, which results in a fellow student or French citizen they know experiencing some emotional issues. Then this evil warlord like figure creates a dark butterfly that is able to turn that persons’ negative emotions into a super villain. Ladybug and Cat Noir fight the villain while doing a little verbal banter, the villain is defeated, everything goes back to normal, and the everyday problem is resolved as well. The series is definitely a throwback to old 80’s and 90’s cartoons. You know; the ones where every episode would start up and finish with everything going back to the same status quo at the end of every story. The show even features some recycled animation for villain scenes and parts of the action scenes in every story. However it’s hard to tell if this was to help save money on the budget, or if it was an intentional shout out to the old way animated programs did things, since the repeated animated bits are much briefer than the kind of stuff you’d see in classic shows.

However, this is one of those few shows where having a repetitive formula does work. First off: the scenes that feature Marinette and Adrien living their more normal everyday lives are always the more unique parts of any episode. Plus, each individual villain has a different design and unique set of powers. And while the action scenes can be repetitive with the characters’ using the same powers often, they do look amazing. The computer generated animation in this show is pretty spectacular. While there have been animated shows done better than this program, the action scenes are definitely above average for a modern super hero TV show. The settings, movements, and fast pace never get boring. So the real question may now be: is this show worth watching? Well like I said, the show is very formulaic and simple. So if you’re looking for something different and complex, this is not the series to watch. However if you want a fun simple show that’s a throwback to classic cartoon shows, or you’re a fan of all kinds of super hero stories but wanna see something that plays with the classic super hero genre is a different but very entertaining way,
Miraculous is definitely a fun new show to check out.
