A Futile and Stupid Gesture – 4 out of 5
Say what you will about the current state of National Lampoon’s name but there was a time where it was synonymous with comedy. Today, it is associated with terrible, Direct-to-DVD sex comedies that pale in comparison to what they were making in their heyday but there was a time when they were a contender and that’s what this Netflix original; A Futile and Stupid Gesture, focuses on and centers around its co-creator; Doug Kenney.

Will Forte as a younger Doug Kenney and Martin Mull as the "modern day"
Kenney, this movie is already great! |
Doug Kenney (Will Forte) and Henry Beard (Domhnall Gleeson) were friends from college who wrote and published comedic books together. When school ended and real life was threatening to pounce on them, Kenney came up with the idea that they published a comedic magazine and call it National Lampoon. After being rejected by several publishers, they found one that took a gamble with them and that started a journey of controversy and comedy. The magazine made way for a radio program and a live show but it ended up being too much and the two went their separate ways. Eventually, Kenney found work in movies and made Animal House and Caddyshack but when the lure of alcohol and drugs became too much, Kenney found his life spiraling out of control.

Will Forte has proven himself time and time again and to the point that if I just
hear he is involved in a project I will watch it. |
A Futile and Stupid Gesture takes an interesting tale about the rise and fall of the iconic name and makes it a fun and hilarious event to watch. There’s a lot of dark things that fall on Kenney’s path in the world of comedy and this movie could have easily been given the dark and dramatic treatment but in the hands of director David Wain, a comedy biopic was put forth that is able to make light of the awful moments (like Kenney’s love of drugs and his ultimate death) and presents this (and the lighter moments) in a way that is very memorable.

Matt Walsh has some really great scenes in this film. That guy is great.
A big part of the charm of this feature is how the events are portrayed. There’s a lot of fourth wall breaking, creative scene transitions and Meta jokes that mock its production. For example, it made fun of how obvious Forte’s wig is or how a lot of the actors look nothing like their real-life counterparts. This formula not only brought about some great jokes and gags but it also made the plot move and flow amazingly well. This approach never allowed the tale to drag or get bogged down in anyway.

The film also has a lot of fun nods-and-winks and Easter eggs. |

Joel McHale doesn't look like Chase nor does he
capture the man's racism and terrible attitude.
Nothing was right about this casting. |
The final bit of charm that really got me hooked on this film is the performances. Will Forte and Domhnall Gleeson are absolutely fantastic to watch and they are very funny (and even work in some decent drama, too). However, this cast is huge and there is a lot of very strong comedic talent to take in. Some might even say too much talent—not me though. While the film makes a joke at its own expense about how some of the choices in actors were sketchy because they didn’t resemble the people they are playing, it sure is nice to watch these performers try and capture the voice and spirit of the iconic comedians. For example, during the scenes where they are filming Caddyshack and Jon Daly is playing Bill Murray. Now Daly doesn’t look at all like Murray but he did capture the man’s essence perfectly. This take is done over and over again as people like John Belushi, Harold Ramis, Tom Snyder and Chevy Chase fill up the roster of characters and it was fun to see how each actor was going to portray them.

Does Gleeson ever stop working? I mean, I'm glad I get to see him in so many
movies but I hope he's not burning himself out. |
A Stupid and Futile Gesture is going to give you a very loose and general idea of the history of Doug Kenney and how he helped create the name of National Lampoon but it’s definitely not an educational type of biopic—actually, there really aren’t many of those because so many biopics involve adjusting the events in order to up the drama. However, there’s a charm to how the feature is more worried about delivering a comedy that has the gist of Kenney’s life than they are about delivering Kenney’s life and giving a gist of comedy. I was a little disappointed that the story portrayed the man’s death like it was definitely a suicide rather than the accident that the official statement of the law has made it to be but that’s a minor gripe in an otherwise very amusing movie.
