Spider-Man:  Into the Spider-Verse – 5 out of 5

Ever since I first discovered Mile Morales, I’ve been a fan of the character.  I’m of the thinking that representation matters and I’m not of the mindset that having a secondary hero to an established hero in the world of comics that isn’t a straight white male is a bad thing.  I don’t get irrationally angry because characters like Miles or Ms. Marvel or Ironheart come into existence.  Them being around have yet to erase characters like Peter Parker or Tony Stark.  These new diverse entries into the world of comics are companions, teammates and equals to these already established characters and they just offer up new stories and open the doorway for new people to experience hero tales from characters that represent them.  I’ve never understood why this results in utter hostility from the toxic members of the fanbase—well, technically I do understand because these people are racists and misogynists.  With that being said, when I first saw the trailer to Spider-Man:  Into the Spider-Verse, I was super excited to see Miles Morales hit the big screen and, on top of that, it was going to be a Spider-Verse tale so I was also going to see the other cool adaptations of Spider-Man that this unique comic storyline has to offer.  I sadly didn’t get to see it in the theater but blind bought it when it hit Blu-Ray and, I gotta say, it was worth every penny!

Now let's get a live-action Miles Morales film.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is just an average kid trying to make it in this world.  His parents want what’s best for him so they send him to a private school and hope that it bolsters his talents but he just feels alienated there.  One night, while spending some time with his Uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali), Miles is bitten by a radioactive spider and he soon finds he has superpowers like Spider-Man (Chris Pine).  These new powers end up leading him to a fight between Spider-Man and Wilson Fisk’s henchmen.  Fisk (Live Schreiber) is constructing a supercollider with a brilliant scientist (Kathryn Hahn) in hopes of opening up doorways into other dimensions.  Spider-Man stops him but is killed in the process.  Little did anyone realize, however, was doorways were opened and a Spider-Man (Jake Johnson) from another universe was pulled through.  This new Spidey decides to take Miles under his wing and intends to work with him to destroy Fisk’s supercollider along with other Spiders who have found their way to Miles’ dimension; Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) the Spider-Woman, Spider-Man Noir (Nicholas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and her spider mechsuit, and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney).  However, time is running out for the heroes because the longer they are away from their dimension, the greater the risk they run of being wiped out of existence.  Can the team stop Fisk’s plan and can Miles become the hero he is destined to become?

I really want to see more Spider-Verse films because there are so many
cool adaptations of Spider-Man out there.

Jake Johnson's Spider-Man is a broken man at the
bottom...never have I ever identified with a
superhero more in my life.
Spider-Man:  Into the Spider-Verse is so incredible.  Everything about it is so terrifically creative and fun and just an absolutely awesome spectacle to experience.  I don’t even know where to begin in this gushing review because I found the film to be complete and total perfection.  I guess I can start with the animation and art.  The visuals, designs and animation to this film are completely unique and stunning in every possible sense.  The color palate is a feast for the eyes but the way the animators and artists made the whole feature look and feel like a comic book come to life was completely
bananas and utterly fantastic.  Beautiful doesn’t even begin to describe how lush and detailed everything was or how amazing everything felt.  Adding to the amazing look and enhancing everything was a ridiculous attention to detail as well.  And that is going beyond just the fun Easter Eggs this movie supplies (and there is a lot of them).  The craftsmanship that was put into this animated feature is totally awesome-sauce and unlike any animated film I’ve ever seen.  I was beyond impressed.  You can't write this off as another "comic book cartoon" because this was art.  I don't ever write off comic book features because I love them but even to people who use their tastes in films as a symbol of status, this one is impossible to ignore with the merits and creativity that went into it.

While not the first female Doctor Octopus to exist, toxic fanboys will act like
she is a new idea and cry about "SJW nonsense" ruining comics.

Yep, I blubbered like an idiot with Lee's cameo.
The next thing that really delivers in this film is the cast.  Everybody in this film is so great.  Moore really captures the dichotomy of Miles as he is determined to do the right thing but also doubts his abilities.  Johnson is so fun as the broken down Peter Parker.  Hailee Steinfeld is just plain badass as Spider-Gwen, and John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn and Nick Cage are just fun as Spider-Ham, Peni and Spider-Man Noir.  Additionally, you have Mahershala Ali really bringing the drama as Uncle Aaron.  This character has a darker side to him that is shielded from Miles and Ali really balanced out being a shadier guy with the good uncle that Miles only knows him as.  There is a lot of talent in this film and they are all doing an amazing job but I have to also mention Live Schreiber as Fisk.  First off, I couldn’t tell it was Schreiber but he really brought this quiet intensity to the role that made Fisk imposing beyond the fact that he is a massive guy.

And he is a massive guy.  Like, "no one could ever be that big and not be
on a reality show that features them grown into their sofa" massive.

The final element that really brought Into the Spider-Versetogether is the music.  The thumping beats and kicking hip-hop really complimented the visuals and action.  The music also help craft the atmosphere for the film and gave it a slicker edge and just made the whole thing that much more entertaining and fun.  In fact, all the sound engineering and editing in this feature was top notch stuff.  The sound really helped give the world life and also worked to created amazing amounts of visceral and emotional reactions.  For example, the character Prowler had a killer score that accompanied him and really helped illustrate how threatening he is and how mysterious he is concerning his place in the story.

Prowler was definitely intimidating as hell thanks in part to killer sound design.

There is a lot of great stuff at work in Spider-Man:  Into the Spider-Verse.  It’s put together simply amazingly with great sound, a killer soundtrack, gorgeous visuals and terrific character design.  The animation looks unbelievable and the voice cast is pretty much perfect.  Plus, we get to see awesome comic characters like Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales come to life in a movie.  There was nothing I didn’t like about this film because it was amazing from start to finish.

I won't fully spoil what happened in the post-credit sequence but I geeked
out when I saw this arm enter frame.
