Take Shelter – 4 out of 5

If I hear that Michael Shannon is in a film there’s an almost near perfect guarantee that I will watch the film.  I’m a fan of the man and the intensity he brings to his performances.  Take Shelter, from writer/director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special), never blipped on my radar and only discovered it by accident one day on the internet.  I think Nichols is a great writer and filmmaker but, I’ll be honest, it was the presence of Shannon that convinced me to watch this.

Shannon brings some sex appeal with a shower!  Oooo La La!

Curtis (Shannon) is a hardworking blue collar man trying to raise his deaf daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart) with his wife Samantha (Jessica Chastain).  Abruptly, Curtis starts having strange visions and horrific nightmares that foretell of a disaster coming.  The visions cause him to grow in paranoia and he starts to believe that he might be suffering from some mental health issues but also takes them as a warning and he starts to construct a shelter in his backyard.  His deteriorating mental health and construction obsession leads him down a path of financial ruin and one that can destroy his family.  Is it all in his head or is Curtis seeing a terrifying future?

"Yes, yes.  I get it, everybody poops.  Let's talk about the darkness that
is coming to destroy us all."

Like other Nichols films I’ve seen, there is this quiet intensity to the story.  Curtis and his visions aren’t presented in an “in-your-face” sort of manner and, instead, have a very grounded feel to them.  They grow as the story progresses and are developed in such a fashion that it is easy to question, as a viewer, if Curtis is seeing some prediction or is suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness.  In fact, the aspect I found most enjoyable about the film is how these visions don’t result in the trope of the “crazy” character screaming to the heavens about something bad is coming and no one will believe him.  Instead, this concept is treated in probably the most realistic way I’ve ever seen this portrayed.  Curtis seeks out medical treatment and is presented more as a man who looks like he’s losing his way and trying to find his way back rather than someone who suffered a mental snap.

Oh man, they had Pepsi instead of Coke.

Another factor that helped greatly with Curtis’ journey is Shannon’s performance.  The man has a very unique intensity and there’s no doubting his screen presence.  This role, on the other hand, is very different from his usual work.  Often Shannon plays a kinda scummy, jerk of a man but this one he is essentially a sympathetic working man, husband and father.  It honestly took me some time to get used to seeing him in this role but it ended up playing to his strengths as Curtis started to be victimized by his visions.  Shannon was able to portray the character as someone who is just off-center enough that you can be concerned for him but also see him as someone who is on the verge of snapping.  Shannon’s portrayal presented a character that you feared for and sometimes were in fear of and it made Curtis’ journey and development engaging to watch because you wanted to see if he was right or if it was all in his head.

Michael Shannon shows up as your Uber driver, are you scared or thrilled?
Or a little of both?

This brings me to my final point that the feature did exceptionally well:  The ambiguity.  Often in films that involve the question of “Is this happening or not?” or involve a character who looks crazy as he spouts off about a conspiracy or doom to come, the ambiguity isn’t there because we, the viewers, know the protagonist is right despite how they appear to the other characters.  Take Shelter bucks this and never lets the audience know if Curtis’ visions are a legit warning to come or just delusions of an ill mind.  The whole story is presented with subtle evidence that both might be the outcome and Shannon’s performance is done in a way that it really could have been either outcome.  This all culminates in a fantastic ending that lets the viewer decided the outcome.

"Are you my mommy?"

On the downside with Take Shelter, some viewers might find the slow-burn pace to be a turnoff.  While I was engaged in the film, there were times when I felt the narrative was moving too slowly.  Additionally, there was a noticeable lack of chemistry between Shannon and Chastain for me.  I never felt like they were a married couple.  This played well to their conflicts they are having in the story but I never felt an underlying love between them that sold the reality of them being a married couple for the film.

"Yes, let's watch daddy's descent into madness from the safety of the house."

Take Shelter is an interesting take on a thriller.  It presences itself as a very grounded tale and develops itself with an emphasis on intrigue.  It has tremendous performances and a pace that allows for an authentic feeling growth within the characters and story and it culminates in an ending that lets the viewer decide the outcome.
