The Florida Project – 4 out of 5
I heard nothing but great things about The Florida Project. I never saw a trailer for it; I only heard people’s reactions to it. Hell, I didn’t even get a full synopsis of the film, just a general elevator pitch. It’s been sitting on my Watch List for over a year now and I finally decided to check it out and I was just enthralled and completely immersed in this movie.

I would make a joke about the kids hocking loogies but that's what they were
literally doing. |
The feature follows a six-year-old girl named Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), who lives in a motel in Kissimmee, Florida in the shadow of Walt Disney World. She spends her days with her best friends running amok and causing trouble for the motel manager; Bobby (Willem Dafoe). Halley (Bria Vanaita), Moonee’s mom, struggles to find ways to pay the motel so they can live there. The situation quickly starts to deteriorate and the only world that Moonee has ever known is at risk of being completely shattered.

The Mouse sees all! |
The Florida Project tells a story in a very non-traditional sorta way. We don’t see a standard A to B to C story that establishes a well-defined conflict and develops a solution. Instead, the film is more about character and watching their lives build and progress. We’re introduced to all the characters through Moonee through a very natural feeling of development. Essentially, the story is like a fly-on-the-wall look at this little girl’s life with the only real destination being her development. On paper, such a formula can cause one to predict that this thing could be boring as it essentially has no stakes or sense of urgency but it ended up resulting in a feature that I was completely engaged with and couldn’t look away from. This presentation also results in a very grounded,
authentically feeling tale and it never felt like you watching a movie but rather experiencing a slice of real life.

So, this motel's idea of a future involves a lot of missiles? |
Authenticity seems to be the name of the game for the film thanks to its use of natural lighting, improvised dialogue and fresh faces filling up the cast; Dafoe is the only household name in the movie. Everything about this story just felt so real and it was easy to feel sympathetic towards the characters. Even when they were doing terrible and desperate things to survive and make their way in the world you understood their motives. This authentic feel is also felt strongly when it concerns the performances. Everyone was truly astounding to watch and it was easy to get lost in the characters.

He just realized that a P. Parker is staying in 104. |
Finally, I was impressed with the overall tone of the film. The feature is dramatic and emotional but done so on a level where it never feels sappy or manipulative. Again, this is where the authenticity comes into play. The story and Moonee’s journey is a heavy one capable of breaking the viewer’s heart but the “realness” the story portrays stops it from feeling like it is over doing it. After it ends, the film stuck with me but I never felt like what I was seeing was overtly constructed in order to result in a specific emotional response but rather just revealed for the audience to absorb and digest.

I'm impressed that I didn't make one Florida Man joke. |
The Florida Project is a striking film. The performances are incredible and the journey it took me on was something that grabbed me and didn’t let me go. It’s a haunting exploration of poverty seen through the eyes of a child and right outside the cherished gates of the epicenter of childhood wonder. Overall, it was an incredibly impressive film that told so much with so little and did so with an amazing authentic feel.
