Review
'SAVING PRIVATE RYAN' is an extraordinary film from Steven Spielberg which is unlike any other movie he has made (except for 'Schneider's List'). It is known for its downbeat tone and realistic approach of war which conveys the harsh realities that many soldiers have endured this turmoil. While the storyline isn't that great, the direction from Spielberg proves that he has the aptitude to push certain limits on this picture with attention to detail. Especially when he sinks his teeth in bringing the atmosphere into the hellish war torn landscapes in which many soldiers lose their lives during this skirmish. The cinematography by Janusz Kaminski is often times a bit shaky but is groundbreaking in every way and the battle sequences are stunning to behold. Even the visual representation of the famous battle that is set in Omaha Beach is impressive.
Tom Hanks delivers a terrific performance which consists an amount of depth in his character and though he could have won an Oscar, had it not been for Roberto Benigni in 'Life is Beautiful'. Matt Damon while a supporting player is in a pivotal role as the titular soldier who gets lost in the battlefield. Most people will be surprised that this is one of the early movies that Vin Diesel had starred in before he became an action star. John Williams' musical score was haunting but absolutely beautiful.
A gritty war drama like 'SAVING PRIVATE RYAN' has clearly redefined the genre and is often admired and appreciated for being one of Spielberg's greatest hit films. It is not a movie that is suitable for all young ages as 'SAVING PRIVATE RYAN' is considered to be violent and depressing, it is even hard to watch for some moviegoers.
Star rating: (10/10) Best Movie Ever
