Oft dubbed one of the greatest shows of all time - and occasionally considered the cream of the crop in that regard - Breaking Bad, a show which has tended to struggle in this competition, opens today's polls. Last year's 15th place finish represents its best return in seven attempts, and I am always intrigued to see how well it does. Of the three dramas usually in that greatest ever conversation - The Sopranos and The Wire being the others - this is the only one that remains part of the competition, and it would be nice to see it truly compete. 12 Monkeys is its opponent today, the Syfy time-travel series heading toward a fourth and final season. Fun fact: these two battled each other in last year's second round tie, a year ago on Thursday, with the AMC series coming out on top.
One Tree Hill has been a part of the competition for as long as I've been in charge of it in the last three years, but in five attempts (2010 and 2013 the others) has never exited the first round. It's an almost impressive perpetual struggle. Breaking that duck today would mean taking down Angel, which has reached the quarter-finals in the past; equally, two years ago it was fourth bottom of the pile. A Buffy-Angel third round tie is in prospect, should both reach that stage.
