Assassin’s Creed – 3 out of 5

Video game adaptations really do not have the best track record.  The good ones are never really that great and are just kinda serviceable and the bad ones are just painful to endure.  This really isn’t that surprising because video games are their own unique experience and are an active form of media where the viewer is participating in the action and are not just watching it passively like a movie.  Taking that form and morphing it into a feature that captures the essence of the source material is a really difficult thing.  Sadly, Assassin’s Creed isn’t the movie that is going to bring about the revolution in video game adaptations and lead us into a golden era similar to the one we are in with comic adaptation but it does feel like a major step in the right direction.

Aim for the haystack!

"I sure hope my future generations look exactly like me."
Death row inmate Cal Lynch (Michael Fassbender) is set to be executed but awakens to find that the whole process was faked by a mysterious organization called the Abstergo Foundation.  A scientist there by the name of Dr. Sofia Rikkin (Marion Cotillard) explains to Cal that she is the head of the Animus project, an experiment that unlocks genetic memories in people’s DNA.  She hopes to use Cal in order to learn about one of his ancestors in 15thCentury Spain that protected the ancient artifact called the Apple of Eden; an item that holds the very code to humanity’s free will.  The foundation works alongside the old order of the Knights Templar—the very enemies of Cal’s long gone relative and his organization; the Assassins—and they hope to locate the Apple and take advantage of the knowledge it contains.

"I sure hope my ancestor looks exactly like me."

Accessing memories from one's DNA looks like a
great ride at Six Flags!
Assassin’s Creed earns major points for being a video game adaptation that takes itself seriously and isn’t just some studio shitting out a weak turd that they think audiences will mindlessly watch.  The movie does a great job of crafting an interesting story and, at the same time, having something that feels like it exists within the established universe of the game’s franchise but, in the end, is its own animal.  While my experience with the games begins and ends with playing the first one and then playing the hell out of the pirate one (seriously, I was hopelessly addicted to Black Flag), I can still see all the little Easter Eggs and all the tropes that have been established as this movie clearly respects where it came from.  With a history of having game adaptations being either too literal in their translation or changed so much that it barely connects to the material it was spawned from, this feature strikes a great balance of being something original but also feeling like it belongs.

Parkour!

Other elements that work in this one’s favor is some very cool action, terrific visuals and awesome performances.  The parkour and fights seen in the film feel lifted directly from the games and the way these fights would be edited together with Cal in the Animus machine as he was living out these memories was pretty exciting and also a great way to have the current and past events playing out side-by-side.  Additionally, it would be very difficult to have some bad performances with this cast because you have individuals like Fassbender and Cotillard around and those two never phone it in.  You also have the likes of Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael Kenneth Williams backing things up and they are all incredibly talented.  Finally, this film just looks great.  Visually, the film is stunning with its contrasting images of the dark and shadowy tones of the current events and the bright and dusty look of the past.  It’s really a gorgeous looking film and definitely of a caliber than has never been seen in a video game adaptation in the past.

"I first attempted to get ancestral memories from boogers...it was...unsuccessful."

The major drawback to Assassin’s Creed is the fact that the story is pretty bloated and tends to move very slowly.  There’s a lot of backstory to Cal’s life and that’s just on top of the already rich history between the Assassins and the Knights Templar.  When you add in the Foundation, the technology and movie science needed to find the Apple of Eden, there’s a lot going on in a relative short amount of time.  Some films can make this amount of backstory and world building work but AC has a hard time managing the “show, not tell” rule and you are bombarded with a lot of scenes where exposition is just explained through dialogue.  While I didn’t find this movie to be extremely boring, this habit in the plot and story did leave a lot of sequences that dragged the pacing down to a snail’s crawl and it definitely harmed the entire film.

Even with its issues, let's not forget how great of a villain Jeremy Irons is capable
of being...in any movie, not just this one.

As far as video game adaptations go, Assassin’s Creed is one of the best.  As far as just a film for entertainment purposes, it was okay.  It has enough working for it that it is enjoyable but it is also boring enough in plenty of points that ends up making this a feature that is something I’d only see myself watching once.  However, the stage is set and established and there’s no denying that it has the potential to be a decent franchise.
