Passengers – 2 out of 5
In our very slowly progressing world, a film like Passengersshould have never been made. While the script sat in the pile of other scripts and was believed to never be made, it should have been picked up, read through, realized it is creepy and gross and is focusing on all the wrong issues, put down, and then put a match to. Yes, these are strong words but in reality where every male figure in Hollywood is being revealed to be a creep that uses their power, their stance, and their outdated and desperate chokehold on gender roles, a film that refuses to acknowledge the repercussions and dive into the creepiness it presents—and then later acts as an apologist to—shouldn’t be made. In case you haven’t guessed it, I HATED this film and that’s probably making you wonder why I gave it a 2; a score that doesn’t always mean the film is a total waste of time. Well, my friend, read on to find out that, despite how deplorable the story is, it does have some redeeming factors. (Also, please note, this review will have some spoilers.)

You get to be alone on a big ship flying through space and there's no one to tell you
to put on pants...why are you upset and lonely, you fool?!? |
|
The ship has 5,000 passengers and one effing bar.
I hope the system doesn't wake them up too far
from Homestead II. |
In the distant future, Earth is far too overpopulated and mankind has found a second home on the planet Homestead II. While on a 120 year journey to this planet and carrying 5,000 new colonists, the ship Avalon malfunctions and a young mechanical engineer by the name of Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) is woken up from his sleep pod 90 years early. Jim attempts to make it on his own on the big empty ship but solitude starts to get the better of him and his contemplates suicide. However, he sees a young woman in another pod named Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence) and is convinced he’s in love with her. Selfishly, Jim tampers with Aurora’s pod and awakens her, dooming her to his same fate and not telling her the truth. The two start to get to know one another as they settle for their new life alone on the ship but, before the horrible truth of Jim’s actions can be revealed, they learn the ship’s malfunctions are greater than originally anticipated and the lives of every crew member and colonist on the ship is at risk.
|
Everyone on the ship and that includes the coolest robot bartender ever; Arthur. |
An underlying and unintentional theme of this film is denial. The ship’s computer keeps telling Jim and Aurora that any malfunction on the ship is an impossibility. Hell, Laurence Fishburne plays a member of the crew that is awakened by one of these non-existence malfunctions and even he, with his current situation being the byproduct of a malfunction, says that malfunctions don’t happen on the ship. The biggest denial of all when it concerns Passengers is how creepy the story is. Said creepiness and how lamely it is focused on and then apologized for is the denial the writer Jon Spaihts was experiencing and the director takes it a step further and said that Jim’s actions are what we would all do in that situation. No, director Morten Tyldum, this is what men who cling to the patriarchal society would do because they think everything belongs to them. Personally, I would have accepted my fate and then imitated Tandy and then Last Man on Earth that ship. This inherent denial that Passengers takes is why I found this movie so uncomfortable and so infuriating.
|
Seriously, 5,000 people and the only avenues of entertainment this ship is shown to
offer is one freakin' bar, three restaurants, a tiny basketball court and
a Dance Dance Revolution game. The Avalon better wake people
up only hours before it lands. |
Passengers does do some things well. Visually, the film is stunning and the special effects are great. The reality and world building the film does to create backstory is very effective and seamless. The performances are fantastic as J-Law and Pratt bring their natural charisma to the roles, L-Fish (that’s a good nickname) brings his intense gravitas, and Michael Sheen is very entertaining as the robot bartender. These factors are the only things that kept me from giving this movie a more deserving score of 1 because the story and plot undo all that’s decent in the movie. To put it bluntly, the film is gross and is very irresponsible with how it handles said grossness. The worst part about how uncomfortable the story is has to be the reality that everything wrong with the plot and story could have been easily fixed and it could have made this an infinitely better feature.
|
But the movie does look cool. |
|
I'm just glad the movie decided to not show us the
horrible things we know that creep did while
Aurora was still asleep. |
While Jim’s actions against Aurora are reprehensible, the potential for drama, tension, and terror from a storytelling perspective makes them worthwhile to pursue. Had Passengers been a thriller that showcased real fears that women in modern society have to deal with as it concerns selfish men and stalker behavior might have actually made this a groundbreaking movie. Had the production had the guts (or let’s say balls because this is a very misogynistic film) to make Jim the villain that he clearly is, this movie could have been amazing. Hell, the movie is even kind enough to allow Aurora a solid ten minutes of screen time to be rightfully angry with what Jim has done but, not long after, a new character is introduced and the plot comes rolling in to deny her what has happened—ugh, it’s almost too close to reality. Essentially, a member of the crew (Laurence Fishburne) is awakened by a malfunction on the ship and he learns that it has sustained some critical damages.
|
The look of disappointment from Fishburne as I said "critical damage" but
didn't bother to make a D&D joke. |
This suddenly becomes the focus of the film and what has transpired against Aurora is pushed under the rug. The character even tries to tell this to the crew member but he basically says to her, “Sucks to be you.” Laurence Fishburne is equivalent of the guy who says dumb shit like “If you don’t want to get raped, you shouldn’t dress like that.” Immediately after this, the plot comes in to remind us that the ship is falling apart in an effort to make us forget that Jim is a slime ball and then the writer does a very hacky job of redemption as Jim decides to sacrifice himself to save the ship and, in doing so, Aurora suddenly realizes how much she loves him and how okay she is with the fact that her future has been determined by this creep.
|
"You denied me my right to choose and determined my fate for me. Now I love you!" |
|
Don't look so shock. You're the villain of this story even
though the movie won't admit it. |
I understand that making Pratt a villain would be a very hard sell but it would have vastly improved the sickening apologist, Stockholm Syndrome vibe that this story and plot have. Hell, just having both Aurora and Jim’s pod’s malfunctioning at the same time and abandoning the poorly developed idea of Jim being a stalker and having the two fall in love as they save the ship would have worked just fine. It would have felt generic as hell but at least it wouldn’t have this shamefully constructed tension that ultimately went nowhere and basically sold the idea that Jim’s selfish actions were okay because he later performs a single selfless act. Instead, what we are left with is a film that truly didn’t understand at all the terrible concepts it was presenting and was so misguided in its presentation of human emotion, love, and forgiveness that it could only be written by a man. This is why we need diversity. Imagine if Passengers was written and directed by women? We would have gotten an amazing dark thriller set in space.
|
Look at her, all upset because a man decided she should be his companion
and he's doomed her to die. You ladies are so emotional. |
There are so many things Passengers could have done to correct its terrible course that could have made it work. Just the elements of the special effects, the visuals and the dynamite cast already give this feature so much potential but it’s all undone by a terribly unfocused story and a very mishandled and messy plot. This movie really could have been an amazing product that provided real commentary about misogyny, rape culture, and how we treat women but, instead, we just get a movie that is basically “Even in Space, Female Accusations Go Unheard.”
