Based on the book series created by Else Holmelund Minarik, Little Bear is a children's cartoon series that premiered back in 1995 that has had a long airing history in many English speaking countries. The series is about a talking little bear named... Little Bear, who experiences simple day to day like problems with his friends that are all different species. However rather than being animal based problems, all of the issues they deal with are actually more simple human based problems that are really the type of simple things preschool and kindergarten age children deal with. Now because of the extremely simplistic nature of this series, and the fact that this was a specially requested editorial piece this review is going to be divided into four categories: the good, the bad, the nit-picky, and the impact the series has had on people. And so... here we go.
The Good

The first thing that comes to mind when looking at this classic 90's cartoon is that it is very laid back. There are no high stakes, and most episodes just feature the characters being characters in a very child friendly world. And speaking of child friendly, the show can make you feel very nostalgic. No, not nostalgic for this series. But nostalgic for childhood. Everything the characters deal with in this show are very simple problems children deal with. But unlike many PBS and Nick Jr shows, the series isn't trying to teach any school based messages such as how to read or how to count. It deals more with kids dealing with basic social and environmental factors that go beyond what kids experience in just a classroom. Meaning that it feels less insulting to re-watch than Barney teaching you how to count to 10 or Elmo teaching you how to spell words. If you have to do super simplistic television, then this is how you do it.
The Bad

The thing is... this show is way too simplistic. Look, it is good in any TV show to let the characters just breath a bit and be themselves. It's an excellent tool to build who they are. However, the level of drama in this show is at rock bottom. Watching this show feels like watching kids playing on a playground. Yes, for the kids it's fun. But as an un-involved observer with no emotional attachment, it gets boring really quickly. Kids don't need shows that feature characters just doing the simple basic things they do every day. They can experience that themselves. They need highly imaginative stories that help them explore concepts in the world they're still trying to understand, or witness stories that tie into deeper human themes that last longer than childhood. Or at the very least, you need something that features much more entertaining characters that you just really enjoy watching play off each other. A great example of this is Winnie the Pooh. Now with that movie and series, the stories were also always really simple. However what worked with Winnie the Pooh was the characters were very strong and had very defining traits that came into conflict with each other. Thus just having these characters in a room together created good entertainment. In Little Bear however, everyone acts way too similar to each other.
The Nit-Picky

The world of Little Bear is weird. First off, how come Little Bear stands up like a human when the other animals can't? Why do Little Bear's parents wear clothes but Little Bear doesn't? Do bears just walk around in their birthday suits until they reach a certain age? Little Bear's human friend Emily wears clothes? Why isn't she disturbed that all her friends don't cover themselves up like her? How do humans and animals co-exist in this world? The bears must get jobs. Why is there only one human family who visits these animals? Is the animal neighborhood just not popular with humans? Is there some form of racism against talking animals in this world? Why does Emily's grandma have a dog that just barks when all of the other animals can talk? It's the same as wondering if Pluto will ever walk Goofy? This show's reality makes no sense!!!
The Impact

But now it's time to look at if this show truly is worth watching and how this show has affected people over the years. Because it was on for eight years, which is a long run for any children's cartoon. So it obviously did something right. There are fans of this show out there that claim to have loved this show as a child, and still love it now. But why is this the part of people's childhood that they hold onto so much? Well, because this show is a great embodiment of early childhood. Despite the fact that these are talking animals in the show, these characters do act like very simple preschool and kindergarten children (at least: preschool and kindergarten children of years ago back before modern parents let iPad and Kindle screens suck their kids' entire identities out). But basically: this isn't the Sesame Street version of childhood where life is a playground of colorful characters and lessons taught in song and dance. This show embodies what a classic lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon felt like when you were a kid at the playground or having a play date with a friend. The show truly feels like early childhood.

So now the big question is... is this show worth watching? Well there's a complicated answer I'm gonna give. Looking back at something that makes you remember your childhood can be fine... but only on occasion. Looking far back at your past can be good in the sense that it helps you remember how far you've come, along with all of the experiences and lessons that had a positive impact on making you what you are now. However, over indulging in the past or nostalgia doesn't move you forward. In order to properly grow, you have to accept the present and find ways to grow in it considering what your life situation is now, versus just dwelling on what it was like years ago. It's fine if you're dwelling on memories that help you grow, but it can be a bit unhealthy to yearn for a simpler time you'll never experience again. Going on a nostalgia trip can be a fun break from reality, but that's all it is. A break, before you get back to the real world. And that's honestly how
Little Bear should be viewed. A show that should be watched if you're looking for a simple break from reality. But while watching, never forget... that while childhood was a fun old adventure, growing up now... holds the great number of... possibilities.
