Hey everyone. Captain Sean here with a movie review that’s both something several people have been asking I review, and something I honestly wanted to better look at myself because it was a fun part of my childhood: The Parent Trap (the 1998 version starring a young Lindsay Lohan). A story is about two twins separated at birth that meet up at a summer camp, that try to get their divorced parents back together. Now for those that don’t know, this late 90’s Disney movie was actually an adaptation of a very old Disney movie from the 1960’s. And truth be told: I actually did see the older version of this film first when I was young at a summer camp on a rainy day, but I really didn’t like it. Now it could be that I just didn’t give it a chance because when I was a kid, I was in a phase where the only television and movies I watched were ones with male main characters. If it had a girl on the cover, I didn’t want to even check it out. And if it had romance, I definitely didn’t want to check it out.
That’s what makes the 90’s Parent Trap movie all the more an amazing piece of work because… as a young boy… I did like this movie. Now it may have been a remake of something I didn’t like, complete with female main characters, and a romance story; but somehow… as a young boy I liked this. It may be a romantic comedy family film with many of the clichés that many other romantic comedies and classic family films use. However I do believe that with any genre, if you get just the absolute best actors, producers, and film makers to put all of the pieces of a movie together, you can get people who otherwise would appall the concept of your movie to actually like it a lot. Which is exactly what worked on me long ago. But the real question now might be: why does this romantic comedy family film work? Well that’s something we’re going to take an in depth look at today.
Now to put it simply: the movie works because there is always lots of changes in development in the plot, the strong emotional moments keep coming at you one after the other, and the story mixes in modern story tropes with old ones. How old? As old as the earliest pieces of European based fiction. I mean you’ve got two identical kids switching places like in the Prince and Pauper, you’ve got a would be evil step-mother like from classic fairy tales, and you even have the kids each going on an adventure overseas to a new world where things are different like in classic adventure stories. Plus, it’s that classic escapism of getting to be another person and having the opportunity to create an ideal life. It’s all ingredients from ancient story telling. But then you have the more modern story telling elements as well.
This starts early on with the two separated twin girls meeting up with each other at a summer camp. From here, the movie takes it time to establish these two preteens as… well… preteens; complete with funny quirks, pranks, and doing other silly stuff that preteens do. Plus, this early part of the movie allows for the two twin girls to grow in their relationship together. For example, they don’t realize they’re twins at first. They just think they’ve happened to find that one in a million person out there that looks like you. And at first they go through the typical motions of hating each other, then learning they’re more alike, and they learn to respect the other. But it’s only then do they realize without a doubt they have to be twins. And on a side note, the movie does an excellent job at getting the audience to believe Lindsay Lohan is playing two people. At the time this came out (when less people has access to the internet), tons of people didn’t realize this was one girl playing two characters. And even if you did know going in, you kind of forgot really quickly because that’s just how good the special effects, the acting, the direction, and the story are.
Now another thing that works with this movie is the pacing. The movie is over two hours long, and yet it never feels slow. That could be because of the change in environments and ever changing dynamics all of the characters are going through. For example, the two girls meet at summer camp and have a lot of experiences there. However the summer camp portion of the movie is only about thirty minutes long. Then the movie spends time with the twins switching places and pretending to be the other. And essentially you get two more separate adventures with the twins experiencing life in new places. Then you have another adventure start up when they and the parents meet up resulting in crazy wacky shenanigans. But then the movie has to tell another short tale that focuses on how the girls are going to get their dad to break up with some mean woman that could be their step-mother. But then we have to have another tale about the two parents maybe getting back together. So really, this movie’s story is actually… six stories. You really feel like you went on a long journey when this movie is over since it feels you get a quintuple amount of extra tales for that one ticket cost.
But the other reason this story works are the strong emotional moments. Now many romantic comedies and family films have their one or two strong emotional scenes. However, the Parent Trap… has a bunch. First off, you have the tear jerking scene where the girls realize they’re twin sisters. Then you have each of them meeting the respective parent they never knew resulting in two more moving scenes. Then you have the handful of moments when both the parents and the family members realize who each girl really is, and you essentially you have those family reuniting moments done again. Then you have the moments where they’re all together finally, and then you have the ending that you knew was coming but because this two hour movie felt like an even longer ride you just feel so… emotional in all the right ways. This is exactly how you do a feel good movie that relies on emotions just right. You have lots of tender loving moments throughout the story, but you change up the settings and dynamics often so that the loving words and hugs don’t feel like they’re starting to repeat themselves.
Now I’m not going to over analyze this movie scene by scene, or section by section. If you’ve never seen the 1998 version of the Parent Trap, it is a perfect feel good movie you want to experience without too many specific spoilers. Yes, you can guess exactly early on: how the story is going to turn out. Yes, you can predict exactly what each character is generally going to do when most scenes begin. But like I said, the execution is far better than the majority of any other romantic comedy or family films out there. It’s one of the only cliché driven family films I could easily recommend to someone who usually never likes them. Even the harshest of critics can’t deny when that final scene of the movie plays, you don’t care that you saw this ending coming two hours ago. You’ll simply be smiling or crying tears of joy from one of the best feel good films out there.
