The Cloverfield Paradox – 3 out of 5

Cloverfield is one of the few “found footage” films that I enjoy.  It has a lot of the same pitfalls that other films of this subgenre have but they never feel like entertainment killers.  Even more amazing, it is a “found footage” film with great acting—that is incredibly rare.  The spiritual sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane, was an amazing thriller so when it was announced that the franchise was now going to have a new entry in the form of The Cloverfield Paradox, I was pretty excited.  My excitement only grew when I heard that this film will be less of a “brother from another mother” style sequel like 10 Cloverfield Lane and be something that actually links the films together.  After checking it out on Netflix, I can say this is my least favorite in the budding franchise and one that ultimately felt a tad underwhelming.

Elon Musk had something to do with this, didn't he?
It’s the year 2028 and the planet is suffering from an energy crisis, in an effort to create infinite energy the world created the Cloverfield Space Station and on it is the Shepard particle accelerator.  However, on the planet, some fear that if the accelerator works, it will rip open portals to other dimensions and monstrous creatures will enter.  After many unsuccessful attempts, the crew; Ava Hamilton (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Keil (David Oyelowo), Ernst Schmidt (Daniel Brühl), Monk Acosta (John Ortiz) Mundy (Chris O’Dowd), Volkov (Aksel Hennie), and Tam (Ziyi Zhang), are on the verge of giving up but desperately try one last time and succeed.  However, they soon discover that something isn’t right and strange and frightening events start to occur.  They begin to wonder if the conspiracy theorists' fears about the accelerator were right.  Meanwhile, on Earth, Ava’s husband Michael (Roger Davies) wakes up to find the planet is under attack by a monstrous force that might have been brought on by the experiment.

All the destruction on Earth...this wouldn't have happened if there was a
good guy with a particle accelerator.

I know I stated that The Cloverfield Paradox is underwhelming and in our society where we only describe things as either “the best” or “the worst,” the people who enjoyed this film will see that and say that I am giving this one a bad review and assume I hated it.  I didn’t hate this movie but I also didn’t love it.  Overall, I found this movie to be okay.  It has its problems but it also has its highlights.  However, there were two major issues that ended up holding it back, in my opinion.

"Also, are particle accelerators too sexy?  Film at 11."

Let’s start with what’s great about this movie!  First off, the cast is great.  It’s a nice diverse group and everyone’s performances are top notch.  Next up, the tension the story can generate is very captivating and seeing the madness that is spreading across the space station and Michael’s troubles planet side is very engaging and exciting to watch.  Finally, I really dug the story.  The science fiction mainstays that were explored (really trying not to give Spoilers here) were a prime and fertile landscape for some chills and action.  This exploration also provides an entry point that will link all these seemingly unattached films together in their own unique universe.  Basically, almost everything about this film contains a lot of potential to be a very entertaining science fiction feature but, like I said, there were two major things that really held this movie back for me.

He's fine.

One thing that struck me about the movie as it progressed was how, despite its story, it felt no different than a dozen other “the space shit is hitting the space fan” sci-fi movies.  Once the relatively large cast of characters is all needed to meet their end in order to progress the tension and thrills, the movie started to feel really generic.  There was the typical self-sacrifice in order to save the others, the rest of the players being picked off one by one and the final showdown between the hero and the hidden threat.  This isn’t me saying the film is bad but too much of what was progressing felt overly familiar and like I’ve seen it a dozen times before.

Walls eating arms...so cliche.

The station's pet was strange!
The final thing that really held this film back for me was the expectation of it.  Being a part of the Cloverfield franchise brought a certain expectation to it and the reality just didn’t deliver for me.  The impact is further expanded when it's fairly noticeable that the movie was retrofitted to be a part of this slowly growing franchise.  Originally titled The God Particle, the film was a spec script that wasn’t made a Cloverfield film until J.J. Abrams declared it so during production.  Rewrites and reshoots were done in order to create a link.  This was similarly done with 10 Cloverfield Lane but the story of that one was so strong that the feature could have existed on its own.  Paradox, on the other hand, sorta feels like it is simultaneously helped and hindered by its connection to the “found footage” original.  The connecting thread isn’t strong but it feels like it will eventually grow into something in the recently announced fourth film.  This basically makes Paradox a paradox unto itself as the connection tissues is a fun treat to those who love the first film but also feels superfluous and tacked on to a feature that had potential but wasn’t strong enough to exist on its own merit.

Ava's character finds herself fighting for her life in space while her husband fights
for his life on Earth.  All things considered, she handles it well.  I would have
thrown myself out of an airlock almost immediately.

The Cloverfield Paradox has some very memorable moments and is a decent sci-fi thriller.  The cast is great, it’s got a great atmosphere and the suspense is handled functionally well.  However, the film is hindered by a lingering feeling of commonality and there’s no denying that the feature sorta felt crammed into the franchise.  The movie is serviceable but, sadly, I only found it entertaining in the moment and ultimately found something that felt a tad forgettable and something that lacks in replay value like the other films in this series.
