American Made – 4 out of 5

Tom Cruise is one of those artists where I can successfully separate the art from the individual.  I’ve heard that he’s a decent guy to his fans and to strangers on the street but his religious beliefs have always weirded me out.  Without going too deep because the organization is very litigious, I find Scientology to be very unsettling and creepy.  However, Cruise is a really good actor and, in the last decade, I’ve been able to recognize that (I used to hate him) and separate the Scientology/Lord Xenu side of him and appreciate his ever-growing body of work.  So, that being said, I recently checked out his latest film; the biopic American Made, and found it to be a very entertaining movie.

That trademark smile...but, shockingly, there wasn't much of him sprinting
like a madman.  What gives?

In the 1970s, Barry Seal (Cruise) is just a typical TWA pilot trying to make a living.  One day he’s approached by a man from the CIA (Domhnall Gleeson) and is offered a job as a recon pilot, taking photos over Central America.  After they start to offer him jobs as a courier for Noriega, Seal becomes a target of the new and growing Medellín Cartel.  Desperate for money for his now growing family (and looking to remain alive), Seal becomes a drug smuggler for the cartel and goes on to create a small empire of his own.  However, it’s not long before this empire comes crashing down and both the cartel and the United States government is after him.

Cruise did his own flying stunts...because it wouldn't be a Tom Cruise movie
without him doing his own stunts.

Full disclosure:  I’ve never heard of Barry Seal before I saw this movie.  Not that me not knowing him is something special because I’m not really a history buff and there’s a lot of stuff, people and events that I know little-to-nothing about in this subject.  So, with that being said, I can’t really comment on the validity of what was presented beyond the fact it’s a movie and I know they change stuff to highlight the drama, action and the all-around spectacle of the event and/or person.  Now, with THAT being said, I thought this movie was a lot of fun.

Crazy drivers...getting in the way of planes landing in residential areas.

American Made shines thanks to its story being delivered fast (but not furious) and flashy.  Sometimes narration can be a lazy method of telling a story but, sometimes, it feels just right and this movie is one of those just right times.  Seal’s journey from pilot to smuggler is told at a breakneck pace (but never feels rushed) and most of the run is narrated by the character.  The narration is explained within the story but this ultimately gives the feature a fourth wall breaking feel.  This ends up feeling less like it is telling, not showing and more like the character is painting a word picture for you.  This formula also creates an atmosphere for fun rather than drama and this tone works exceptionally well for tale—even though it’s a tale about a guy who ends up working for drug lords.  That isn’t to say this movie never gets serious—because it does—but it has that right blend of just being serious enough and having a good time with itself.

Don't worry, he'll be cleared of all charges.  That's right, Seal is going clear.

The cast in the film is just fantastic.  Tom Cruise does a great job of being extremely charismatic and likable as Seal.  Even though the character is essentially a criminal that is smuggling drugs for bigger criminals, his cocky, wise-guy front he puts on makes him easily engaging and lots of fun to watch.  He’s backed up excellently by Domhnall Gleeson and the rest of the cast of supporting players.  Everyone feels right at home in their roles and everyone feels like they are a part of the story and not just background decoration for a Tom Cruise event.  Sometimes when you have huge stars like Cruise they can overshadow everyone else but, even though the story is about Seal, you never felt like everyone else didn’t matter but rather they were all cogs in the machine that was Seal’s story.

Gleeson's career is on fire and he deserves it.  The guy is talented!

There’s really not much else to say about American Made.  It really is just a well put together feature that tells a fascinating story in a fun way and has a tremendous cast.  Replay value on this one might be a tad limited but the presentation is so amusing that this drawback isn’t too bad.  Overall, it’s a very entertaining movie that takes you on a wild, fast trip and never drags itself down or takes itself too seriously.
