Little Evil – 3 out of 5
Let’s be honest here: We’ve all, at one point or another, believed that a child around us (or one of our own) has been the spawn of Satan. There’s a reason why so many horror films center on children being the objects of fright because they are damn scary. It’s been seen over and over again like the twins in The Shining, Damien in The Omen, and even the baby in Rosemary’s Baby. Little Evil takes this horror trope and takes it for a ride on the dark comedy highway. The ride gets a little bumpy but overall it’s not too bad. Also, I’m unsure why I ended that with a metaphor about driving.

Clancy Brown is in the film and that's already points in its favor. |

Adam Scott is such a treasure. |
Being a stepdad isn’t easy but nice guy Gary Bloom (Adam Scott) is ready to give it the old college try after he marries Samantha (Evangeline Lilly). However, things don’t go so well when he attempts to connect with young Lucas (Owen Atlas) and the kid’s dark and ominous demeanor proves to be a tad unsettling. With his best friend Al (Bridget Everett) at his side, he soon learns that Lucas is actually the son of Satan and the dark being is looking to use the child as a way into the mortal world and he is now either forced to bond with and save the child or end him and stop the Lord of Darkness from escaping Hell.

Inescapable truths: Water is wet, pizza is awesome and kids are products of the devil. |
Little Evil is a simple concept that satirizes films like The Omen and feels primed and ready for an easy laugh or two. Add in a great cast that also includes the likes of Sally Field and Clancy Brown and it seems like a comedy that will definitely entertain. For the most part it does but it never truly feels like it is as good as it can be.

Then again, this movie does have a burning clown so it can't be entirely bad. |
I would never say that Little Evil is a boring or bad comedy because it is definitely funny and I absolutely had fun watching it but it does take some time to get going. When it first kicks off, it supplies pretty mundane and predictable jokes. They are never bad and I never caught myself groaning at what I saw but they all felt too safe and too easy or just too familiar. The setups and the punchlines were all pretty standard stuff but as the film gets chugging along, it definitely starts to pick up and it gets a lot funnier. A lot of this has to do with Everett’s character of Al as she has some great one-liners and outrageous moments. In fact, the best parts are where Everett is the wild card and Scott is playing the straight man. As the film comes to its conclusion, the movie ends up finishing like it started and it felt very homogenized and bland with its comedy. This didn’t leave me feeling disappointed when it was over; it just left me feeling like the overall product was serviceable but never spectacular.

Al was definitely a fun character. |
One big thing that did disappoint me was how little Evangeline Lilly’s character seemed to matter in the story. She is the mother of Lucas and should really play a huge role and she does but only in a way that gives the appearance she is. Conceptually, she is the person who is actively denying Gary that his claims of Lucas’ parentage are true and should be a road block to what he sees and what Lucas really is. There are fleeting moments where this comes into play but it never feels as developed or as utilized as it should. For the most part, the character of Samantha feels like the forgotten one who is easily left out of the story and action. A lot could have been played around with her and involved her witnessing Lucas’ darkness and then experiencing cognitive dissonance in order to explain away what she saw. This could have been a lot of fun but, instead, what you experience is Gary explaining what he experienced and then Samantha writing it off. This felt both lazy from a writing perspective and also a tragic misuse of Lilly’s talents.

You get Lilly, you use Lilly. |

Another underused actor: Tyler Labine. |
Little Evil definitely has some very entertaining moments and has a cast that does a great job with some of the weaker comedic times. The tender side of it is also carried fantastically by the easily likable and endless charming acting of Adam Scott. It does have some problems that felt like they were holding the potential back but they weren’t strong enough to make this a weak or boring comedy. There’s also a definite issue with the film’s tone as it can’t quite master what a horror-based dark comedy needs to be. There’s a line that this film needed to be driven upon that had the feel of a horror film but also is clearly a comedy but this one just couldn’t quite get its horror atmosphere right and it sometimes felt very watered down. Ultimately, the whole feature felt like a safe bet comedy that plays it safe and never does anything unreasonably outrageous but never gets too complacent either. It’s serviceable but still entertaining.
