Tomb Raider (2018) – 3 out of 5
I played the original Tomb Raider games a lot back in the day on the old original PlayStation. Hell, I still remember all the secret items and hidden treasure locations on all of them. Double Hell, I still bust them out on occasions and play through a level or two (the second game was my favorite one. That sunken ship level where you start deep underwater and have to swim to the ship while a great white shark is after you is terrifying but fun!) The films that were adapted from the games starring Angelina Jolie were…let’s face it…not the best. I won’t go as far to say they are terrible because they definitely have their charm. I legitimately think Jolie was good as Croft, the first one has Daniel Craig in it and also Rimmer himself; Chris Barrie, played Lara’s butler. Ultimately, however, the films ended up like so many other video game adaptations go and that is falling well below their potential. This new reboot is an adaptation of the game franchise’s 2013 reboot and the trailer looked like it was going to be very exciting. Did this one manage to break free of the pit that so many other video game adaptations are in? Honestly, it did. I mean, we’ve come a long way from the Super Mario Bros. movie…a long way.

You fools! Two things you don't do. You don't go chasing waterfalls and you
don't go raiding tombs! |

"I'm going to go away now, my daughter, and leave you
alone with our massive, massive, massive wealth." |
After the disappearance of her father; Richard Croft (Dominic West), Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) tries to make it on her own but when she is informed that she might lose her inheritance and her family’s manor is in danger of being sold off, she leaves behind her normal life. Upon her return, she discovers a secret her father was hiding. After the death of her mother, Richard became obsessed with the supernatural and he became interested in a mythical queen who supposedly had the power over life and death. It was the search for this queen’s tomb that resulted in his disappearance. Lara follows the clues but ends up shipwrecked on a mysterious island and meets a violent man who claims he killed Lara’s father named Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins) and he seeks to finish Richard’s work and find the tomb. Now Lara must stop Vogel and keep him from raiding the tomb (see what I did there?).

Look at that island, all mysterious and shit. |

I would have fallen within one second of attempting
that climb. |
One of the strongest aspects of this rebooted Tomb Raiderfilm is how both visually and with its tone it captures the spirit of the 2013 video game. Some of the set pieces and action sequences are directly inspired or lifted from the game but it never feels like it is just trying to do a flat reproduction of what the game did but rather it feels like a loving recreation. This results in scenes that deliver exciting action and that look great and are complimented with a tremendous score that helps set the mood. Video games are difficult to adapt because the medium is an active experience and not a passive one like watching a movie. Even a lot of cinematic cut-scenes have quick-action moments
where the gamer is required to interact with the scene they are watching.
Tomb Raider, by mirroring the vibe from the game, is able to eliminate the feeling that you are just involving yourself in a passive experience that was developed from an active one and makes you feel like you are in the action and the trouble alongside Lara, without feeling robbed of not being in control and doing that thing where you lean with the control because it totes helps the character on screen move better.

The sad reality is that when this reboot was announced, there
was a toxic fanbase that claimed their childhoods were destroyed. |
The cast also did a tremendous job of both bring the game to life and keeping it from being just another mediocre video game adaptation. Alicia Vikander really looked like how Lara Croft is currently portrayed in the games (and not the ridiculous caricature with the impossible breasts that she used to be). I also like that this takes place at a time when Lara is still new to the adventuring game and Vikander was able to find that balance of being a confident and determined new adventurer but also be someone who is trying to cope with being in over their head and not prepared for the reality they found themselves in. She was really so great in the role that I would absolutely love to see her get another chance and see her have another quest in a sequel. Additionally, I really enjoyed Walton Goggins as the film’s antagonist. Goggins is an incredibly versatile actor and he was able to bring this unique blend of quiet ruthlessness to the role of Mathias Vogel. Goggins is also exceptional when it concerns the choices he makes for his character and that often makes him very intriguing to watch, especially when it concerns the way he delivers his lines and his subtle body language. When put together, Goggins and Vikander made for a very dynamic pairing of protagonist and antagonist.

This man is just immensely talented. |

One thing that wasn't a drawback? Nick Frost's
cameo! |
Sadly, I did see some drawbacks to Tomb Raider. Number 1) the story does have some first act problems. While the movie is essentially an “origin story,” the narrative does drag as it is flushing out Lara’s past and building up to the situation her character needs to get to. This is never boring but I won’t deny that it does get tedious at points and I really just wanted to get to see Vikander kick some ass. Finally, Number 2) there is a character that I ultimately felt was wasted in the story and it was one I really wanted to see more of. While Lara is searching for clues to where her father went, she is joined on the adventure by a man named Lu Ren (played by Daniel Wu). The character has a great introduction and it looks like he’ll be a great “sidekick” (for lack of a better word) for Lara but he, sadly, felt superfluous to the story and didn’t really feel like he belong beyond being the catalyst that got her to the island.

Wu deserved more. |
Ultimately, though, these complaints are minor and, even with them, Tomb Raider is still a service piece of entertainment. It may stumble with development and characters but it soars with its visuals, tone, performances and action. The whole film feels like a nice building block where a truly spectacular sequel can rise from and it is my hope that we get to see Alicia Vikander once again utilize the pick axe and get to see her put those two pistols to work on another adventure.
