Once Upon a Deadpool – 4 out of 5
Deadpool and its sequel are two superhero features that showed it’s possible to have an R-rated feature and not muck it up and make it feel gratuitous. I often complain how DC overdoes it and ends up making their features juvenile but the DP films (though admittedly juvenile) captured the essence of the comic book without feeling like it was actively trying to get an R-rating. There’s a big difference between aiming for a rating and having a story that earns its rating. However, it was recently asked, can Deadpool work in a PG-13 feature and be just as effective at making money? Well, Once Upon a Deadpool showed that this experiment can work (in a way) but probably not so much for making money (it didn’t do so hot in that aspect).

No, I'm not crying over the tribute to The Man. Okay, yes I am. |
So, the basic story is still the same. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) loses the love of his life Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and is inconsolable. While attempting to be a part of the X-Men, he comes across the young mutant Russell Collins (Julian Dennison) and learns he is being abused by an anti-mutant organization. Turns out, this abuse has an extreme effect on Russell and he goes on to be a supervillain. This results in a mercenary from the future; Cable (Josh Brolin), to come back in time to kill Russell but Deadpool thinks he can be reached and the future can change. Reluctantly, Cable agrees and, alongside the mutant with great luck, Domino (Zazie Beetz), they set out to help Russell. The only difference is, this time, Deadpool is telling the story The Princess Bride-style to Fred Savage…and it’s edited to be PG-13.

Savage really made this edit worth something. |
A lot of rumors swirled around that this adaptation of Deadpool 2was made at the behest
of Disney because they wanted to see if the character can work in the world of PG-13—where the world of the MCU (excluding the now cancelled Netflix shows) exists in (remember, Disney just completed their buyout of Fox and that means Fox’s Marvel properties are coming back home but, at the time this came out, the acquisition was still being settled).
The fact that Disney recently stated that they will continue to make R-rated Marvel movies once the acquisition was complete either reinforces or negates the rumor but
Once Upon a Deadpool is an interesting, quirky and fun experiment on the fourth wall shattering antihero.

Still one of my favorite gags in the film. |
The inclusion of Fred Savage and the presentation that consists of parodying The Princess Bride is a pretty humorous addition and allows for a lot of entertaining bits. Savage often calls out some of the issue the film has that includes the plot device representation of Vanessa in the story and how often jokes are made that call out lazy and cliché writing. These also act as a setup to the “rules” of this edition of the film and it results in some great humor—like Deadpool literally having a “bleep” button for the swears and utilizing it to make it sound like Savage wants to do some naughty things to one of the feature’s high-profile cameos.

Brad Pitt, one of the most handsome actors in the world, played a character
you couldn't even see most of the film--oh, now I get the gag behind him
playing Vanisher. |
On the negative end, the editing of the movie can be choppy and sloppy. For the most part, it isn’t too bad but a lot of action sequences or moments when the Merc with the Mouth lets the F-bombs and colorful descriptors fly sometimes got wonky. Fight scenes look haphazardly slapped together and sometimes Deadpool’s mouth movements weren’t matching the sounds that were escaping the mask. This doesn’t happen often but when it does it was hard to ignore.
 |
I'm still annoyed that an unmasked Deadpool is better looking than me.
Damn you, Ryan Reynolds, and your impossibly handsome features
that no one can compete with! |
Once Upon a Deadpool isn’t the definitive edit of Deadpool 2. It will in no way replace the original but it is a fun and goofy way to re-experience what you’ve already saw—because, let’s face it, this wasn’t made for kids to finally see Deadpool 2, it was made as a lark. The inclusion of Fred Savage makes from some amusing moments, a lot the original and best jokes still remain intact and this version tells the story in a speedier way (whether that is good or not is up to the viewer). The movie ends up being an entertaining companion piece and a hilarious new way to experience the original product.
