Avengers:  Endgame – 5 out of 5

Ever since the infamous “snap” left me in tears in the theater and I watched my favorite superheroes collapse into dust, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the conclusion to the Infinity Stones storyline in the MCU.  Every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an event for me because I’m such an obsessed fan.  I count down the days to their release, I see the films opening weekend and multiple times after that.  I even take personal days off of work to see these films (I’ve even called in sick in the past to see them). Hell, even being able to purchase them on Blu-Ray when they are out for home release is an event for self-care and entertainment for me.  Needless to say, Avengers:  Endgamehad me in frenzy.  I was going out of my mind with anticipation and I was obsessed with finding out what happens and how they would conclude this story that has been building over the course of a decade plus and over twenty films.  A lot was on the line but Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo did not disappoint.  Additionally, there is no need to worry about Spoilers.  No major plot revelations will occur in this review.

I guess this picture is technical a spoiler if you haven't seen Captain Marvel
because this is from the post-credit scene but if you didn't know Captain Marvel
was in this film that's on you.

Years have passed and the world is trying to come to grips with half the population being wiped out of existence by Thanos (Josh Brolin) and the Infinity Stones.  Some mourn and grieve, some desperately try to return to a normal life and some lash out at the lasting evils in the world and take out their frustrations out on them.  The remaining members of the Avengers; Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), alongside the last remaining Guardian of the Galaxy; Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Thanos’ daughter Nebula (Karen Gillan) think they’ve come up with a way to bring back everything they’ve lost and a way to defeat Thanos once and for all with the help of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd).  However, doing so will put them on a path for the most dangerous mission they have ever encountered.

Thanos will be a tough big villain to top in the next phase of the MCU...
Perhaps Galactus?

Endgame is truly a testament to the incredible and woven fabric of this shared cinematic universe.  The film is an epic culmination of 11 years and 21 films and it is incredibly satisfying to experience and something that has me extremely excited to see what new elements is added in Phase 4 after Spider-Man:  Far from Home comes out.  The feature is quintessential Marvel Studios and it is them at their finest.

And it all started with this man!

One of the things that keeps me so enthusiastically glued to the MCU is the risks that Marvel Studios is willing to take.  The very idea of building a shared universe while Marvel didn’t have the rights to their more lucrative properties like Spider-Man and The X-Men is already risky enough.  General audiences kinda/sorta knew Iron Man, Thor and Captain America but would they go out in force to watch their movies?  After the initial first Phase proved to be successful, they took another role of the dice and adapted films on their even lesser known properties like Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther and Ant-Man.  Then, to further gamble, to combine all of these characters under one film and then to have half of them wiped out of existence was an unbelievable risk.  With each passing gamble, Marvel Studios proved they knew what they were doing and Endgame is no different.  This one ventures into new territory completely unseen until this point and is telling a story that could easily break the love affair the population has with this series.  The risks this feature took worked out amazingly and made a story that was incredibly engaging.

Uh oh, it's a man showing emotions.  I sure the toxic fanboys reacted very
calmly to this.

Like all MCU films, Endgame has that balance of being dramatic, emotional, fun and exciting all at the same time.  It knows exactly when to let the heroes have their egos and throw their weight around, it knows when to let them be vulnerable and show their weaknesses and it knows when to throw in the gags and get light.  Unlike others in this franchise, Endgame is probably the heaviest of all the films. Yes, Infinity Warleft us with broken hearts as we watched all our heroes we love disappear in front of us (Groot leaving kills me so bad) but this one is dealing with the emotional drainage such a thing would bring about and showcasing the hardships of trying to rebuild and heal from such an event.  This is where Endgame really shines brightly.  Yes, there are still a lot of great funny moments but the film really knew how emphasize the turmoil and emotions the heroes were going through so you, as a viewer, can experience their pains but also be instilled with their fighting spirit to avenge those lost.  I’m just going to admit it know, this movie constantly had me tearing up and crying and I’m okay with that.

My birthday present to me this year was getting to meet Paul Rudd at
C2E2.  I got to hug him.  I was literally shaking after meeting him.

Finally, the action in this film does not disappoint.  A lot of the action takes place in later moments of the film as the story has a lot to set up and get going but once the action arrives it is very exciting.  The action set pieces also get BIG in this one.  So big I had to capitalize and put the word “big” in bold font.  Endgame delivers an action spectacular the likes of which the MCU has never seen before.  Granted, like a lot of films on the big screen, the action can be hard to follow but, also like all films, I’m sure the experience is easier to digest on the small screen when it comes out to stream and own.  That being said, it was still flat-out awesome-sauce and contains moments that was hard not to cheer out loud for—but that didn’t stop me or the entire sold out theater from doing so.

Might want to get your arm off Nebula's chair if you want to keep it, Rhodey.

Like any other Marvel film, my complaints about Endgame are very minor and did nothing to hurt my overall enjoyment.  There were some characters I wanted to see more of in the story and there could have been a touch more action.  These complaints were minor for a film that I otherwise find to be pretty much perfect.  Basically, Endgame met the expectations I had for it and then went beyond them so any issues I have with it could never hope to harm my score.

I love how well the MCU has been crafted.  They did such an amazing job
that a room of superheroes that includes a blue cyborg lady and a talking
racoon and it doesn't look weird.

When Phase 1 was complete and I saw all the Avengers assembled on screen together my mind was blown.  It felt like an event I never could have possibly imagined.  When Infinity Wars took that idea and then went further it seemed like I was seeing The Avengers times 10.  Now, after seeing Avengers:  Endgame, I’ve seen the formula enhanced again and taking it in a vast and exciting new direction I know that I have witnessed the epicness of Infinity War times 1000.  The film was a moving and exciting experience as it closes out its gigantic and expansive first story and leaves the door open for a whole new world of potential with its future.
