John Wick 3: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – 5 out of 5
That first John Wick film was like a breath of fresh air in the world of action films. The genre wasn’t necessarily going stale, mind you, but it brought something new and exciting to the world of movies. It’s slick presentation and action set pieces separated itself from the rest of the herd and it brought with it a killer (no pun intended) new character and a story that was incredibly engaging. Chapter 2 built terrifically off of the world that was set up and did that rare thing of a sequel being a great followup to the first film. Wick is back, once again, for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and it does it again and is a sequel that is just as epic as the original.

He's back, baby! |
After killing a person on the consecrated grounds of the Continental, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is now marked “excommunicado” and has a hefty bounty placed on his head. As Wick struggles to find safe haven before every assassin and hitman on the planet comes looking for him, an adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) for the High Table begins an investigation to Wick’s unsanctioned killing. Her investigation puts Winston (Ian McShane), the manager of the Continental, and Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), the leader of the network of homeless agents in New York, in her sights and looks to see them punished and dethroned for their assistance to John. Meanwhile, John teams with the manager of the Continental in Casablanca; Sophia (Halle Berry), in order to get himself back in the good graces of the High Table. However, as John searches for his means to return, the adjudicator teams with the skilled assassin Zero (Mark Dacascos) and uses him and his men to erase all that John has done and to finally put an end to the man they call the Baba Yaga.

No spoilers but John literally uses a horse as a weapon. I won't say how though.
I'll just leave you with that tease. |
Parabellum keeps that high standard for action that the other two films delivered exceptionally on and the story does a tremendous job of expanding the very unique world that John dwells in. On its surface, this third chapter can feel like we are just seeing the same thing all over again as we watch John take a beating and then deliver it back out tenfold. When you boil it down to its very basic components, yes, it is completely that but this film also expands the world in a fantastic way and delivers all new characters and action sequences that never feel recycled or reused. To put it simply, John Wick: Chapter 3 meets the standard that has been set and keeps adding new things to keep things brand new and exciting.

I could watch Ian McShane act for hours. He's ridiculously captivating. |
One thing I really enjoyed about Chapter 2 was how it built on this very eccentric and colorful world that John Wick belongs to. There was this extravagant world of killers for hire that was so interesting to see expanded. Chapter 3 continues this and shows there is still more to see beyond knowing that there are hitman literally everywhere in the world. Not only does this do a great job of creating potential for possible spinoffs but it is just plain fun to see what sort of nutso complicated world that John worked for. This exploration and expansion in Parabellum also introduces us to new characters like Zero, the adjudicator, one of the Bowery King’s lackeys the Tick Tock Man (played by Jason Mantzoukas) and one of those responsible for John’s training; The Director (Angelica Huston). All of these characters are portrayed by extremely talented performers and look like they fit in perfectly with the ornate tapestry that is this universe and all are fascinating cogs to John’s history and future and are assisting in making this more than just a revenge story and more of an expansion of who this deadly character really is. I not only want to see more John Wick films, I want to see more stories from this world and see how the High Table operates, how the Bowery King’s network functions and see the tales of other hitmen.

I would watch the hell out of a spinoff with Halle
Berry's character. |
Once again, Keanu Reeves is all kinds of badass as Wick. I’m an unapologetic fan of Reeves and have been for a long time. Whenever I hear people proclaim he is a bad actor, I defend him. I will grant that he’s attached himself to projects he wasn’t right for but when you put Keanu in the right role the guy is just awesome-sauce. Wick is one of those roles and he continues to make the character exciting in this film. Returning cast members like Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne and Lance Reddick continue to make the surroundings of Wick’s world colorful and engaging to watch as they each have their own interesting eccentricities that are a blast to watch. Ation wise, Wick’s badassery is matched this time around with the likes of Mark Dacascos and Halle Berry; the action scenes that involve these characters fighting with and against John Wick are incredibly exciting and all kinds of epic. Angelica Huston brings a regal flare with her character and helps in feathering out some of John’s past and, finally, Asia Kate Dillon’s cold as ice and methodical approach to the adjudicator made for a wonderful new antagonist for Wick. In short, the cast does not disappoint in this third chapter.

Zero's stare is enough to get a weakling like me to kick my own ass. |
John Wick: Chapter 3– Parabellum is the next leg in Wick’s journey of vengeance and furious anger and it delivers just as tremendously as the previous two. The cast is fantastic, the look is slick and stylish, and the action never, ever gets boring. I'll be real here, I kinda think this one was better than Chapter 2 and I think Chapter 2 is fantastic! At no point does it suffer from sequel fatigue and it has me geared and ready to see what else this hitman is prepared to unleash.
