Maze Runner: The Death Cure – 4 out of 5
When I first sat down to check out The Maze Runner, my expectations were low. I was predicting I’d see the normal Young Adult dystopia novel adaptation and that it wouldn’t be a movie I’d get in to because I’m not the target demographic. I was 100% wrong. I really enjoyed the film and its sequel. I was pretty excited to check out its final film but it somehow slipped my mind that it came out. After being reminded of its existence, I immediately sat down with it and got to experience the final adventure for the Gladers.

Dylan O'Brien is my casting choice for my X-Men dream cast now that Marvel
Studios once again have the rights to the mutants. He's my choice to
play Cyclops. |
Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers; Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Frypan (Dexter Darden), along with their fellow fighters of The Right Arm resistance, continue their fights against the WCKD. In order to save their friends taken by the organization and to find the cure for the Flare virus that has ravaged the world, they must break into the world’s last city—a city where their enemies Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson), Janson (Aidan Gillen) and their one-time friend turned betrayer Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), lie in wait.

Zombies! Quick, somebody get a guy with a crossbow who was once a
really fun character but has become tedious and boring thanks to years
of absent character development!
The Death Cure continues to build on all the epic action and engaging world-building that came before it and it develops its intriguing story terrifically. The cast is awesome, the new characters introduced are interesting and add to the flavor of the universe and the ending is extremely satisfying for the trilogy. Finally, the film has some amazing special effects and the sets and costumes look terrific. Overall, the film is incredibly entertaining and definitely kept up the quality that was showcased in the other films.

I was excited to see Walton Goggins in the film but yikes! |
The moment the movie starts, you get this killer action sequence where Thomas and the crew are rescuing people off a WCKD train (a sequence that injured O’Brien greatly and shut production down of the film indefinitely) and the story never stops moving after that. The pace in this movie feels very fast. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does require you to be familiar with the previous films because this feature will not hold your hand if you are going in blind (which, I don’t know why anyone would) or if you simply haven’t watched the last two films in a bit and need to start making use of your own recall. This pace ends up being a double-edged sword as it, on one hand, keeps the action and story flowing, but, on the other, doesn’t really let you absorb the more dramatic and emotional parts. The tale does start to slow down as it got near the resolution and the proper time was given to the more impactful moments but through much of the film the narrative is moving, moving, moving.

I feel really bad that O'Brien got hurt in the film but, holy heck, the scene was
awesome-sauce! |
Maze Runner: The Death Cure is an exciting and fun finale to a franchise that I did not expect to enjoy as much as I ended up enjoying. It has some small issues but they are never large enough that they took me out of the tale and ruined my experience. Overall, it’s a very solid film in the trilogy and one that brought about a very satisfying conclusion.
