The Hustle – 4 out of 5
How many dudes in the comment sections loudly cried out that their childhoods were being destroyed when it was announced that we were getting a female-oriented remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels? And of those toxic dudes, how many also threw a tantrum and stated that “Hollywood has run out of ideas?” And of those numbers, how many were actually aware that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is actually a remake of the 1964 film Bedtime Story? My point is that remakes are and have been a big part of the movie business and that a lot of guys on the internet get their nuts in a twist whenever a story comes along that focuses on women. Shit, even if The Hustle wasn’t a remake, just that fact alone would have made them lose their collective minds. Since I’m not one of those who get arbitrarily angry over female-focused films and remakes, I saw The Hustleand I enjoyed the hell out of it!

Honestly, imagine being robbed of laughs because a female-centered
film existed and that made you irrationally mad. |
Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) is a working class con artist who comes across Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway), a regal and upper class con artist. Josephine initially takes Penny and teaches her how to pull a better class of con but eventually Penny starts to feel like she is being used. When a tech genius by the name of Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp) stumbles into their lives, they decide to hold a wager and see which one of them can con the man first.

The Hustle isn’t getting the best reviews and I know the toxic folks who grime up the comment sections will take this as a bit of celebration that a female-centric remake doesn’t work but, in reality, comedies tend to lean more towards the bad reviews than they lean towards the good. Comedy and horror are the two most subjective genres in the world of movies and are often the ones most harshly criticized by critics. This type of nuance is blinded by the guys who will take these bad reviews as a mark that women films suck or that this is why our PC leanings suck but these same guys will turn around and get butthurt if the same critic gives a bad review to a film they like and loudly proclaim in their pseudo-revolutionary tone and in complete utter defiance against society and state that they don’t listen to critics anyway. To me, however, an unpaid critic who does this stupid shit for literally no reason at all felt The Hustle was very funny and extremely entertaining.
The big thing that made this feature work for me was the performances of Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. Separately, they are hysterical and it is very clear that Hathaway is having a blast with her character. In the past, I have found Wilson to be a bit hit-or-miss but have always found her to be funny. Sadly, though, there are some roles that she plays that I found her to be overbearing and that a little bit of her style can go a long way. That wasn’t the case in this one as the production forgoes lazy gags that involve the fat character being incompetent and just falling down. While there are gags that are physical in nature, Wilson’s character isn’t just the stereotypical funny fat character. She might not be in the same class bracket as Hathaway’s character but she is presented as a confident person who is very good at what she does. Now when together these two are just stellar! They have such a great chemistry and work so well as a unit that the laughs came easily and frequently from me and really helped keep the story moving.

This job involved becoming Daredevil. |
From a story perspective, The Hustle is fairly straightforward. The cons aren't wildly intricate so you’re not going to get a slick type of movie you'd see in a heist feature but they work for the comedy that is presented. The broader elements of the human condition that it showcases are your typical stuff and it offers no surprises in that department but, realistically, there is no need for it. Ultimately though, the main con does deliver a fun surprise. I won’t say that it is a shocker of a twist because once you see the pieces come together it is easy to see where it is going but it did result in an ending that was pretty enjoyable. Overall, I found the story to do exactly what it needed to do in order to craft an entertaining feature.

He's a tech nerd. How hard can it be to con him? I mean, I'm a huge
geek and my gullible ass gets conned all the time. Well, I guess the
difference is he's a tech nerd and I'm a geeky dork who just wants
some attention... |

Concerning drawbacks from this one, I didn’t see many. There were some minor story elements I was hoping to see developed more and I kinda wanted to see the duo engage in some more little cons—both separately and as a team—but, beyond this, I really didn’t see much that harmed the overall enjoyment factor.
The Hustle has two big boulders it had to push up a hill and they come in the form of it being a remake—which are said to be hated by the comment sections despite the fact they have been ingesting them their whole lives and sometimes weren’t even aware of it—and the fact it is centered around women—which, as we all see in literally every waking second of existence, society HATES women. Granted, these aren’t an issue for me so when it was suggested by my sisters that for Mother’s Day we gather as a family and take our mom to see this there was no argument from me. Honestly, I was going to end up seeing it one way or another but I had such a great time with it that I didn’t mind seeing it sooner rather than later.
