The Lego Movie 2:  The Second One – 5 out of 5

The Lego Movie quickly became one of my favorite animated films.  When I went to the theater to see it I was blown away.  The animation looked incredible, the cast was terrific and the film just cracked me up.  If they never made another one, I would have been fine with it because it was, for lack of a better world, perfect.  However, since it was such a success, a sequel was made.  I’m not the jaded about sequels type so I was naturally excited for it but wasn’t able to get to the theater to see it.  Since that was the case, I blind bought it when it hit the home market and I don’t regret it.

All my reviews should start with a star vomiting glitter.

My god...it was Earth all along!  You monsters!
Life is very different in Bricksburg and everything is no longer awesome.  While Emmet (Chris Pratt) tries to cling to his optimism, Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) and the others have found themselves on a more brooding path.  After an alien by the name of General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) arrives and kidnaps Lucy, Batman (Will Arnett), Unikitty (Alison Brie), MetalBeard (Nick Offerman) and Benny (Charlie Day), and takes them to an unknown land ruled by Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (Tiffany Haddish).  As Emmet leaves to rescue his friends, he meets a rugged and mysterious adventurer by the name of Rex Dangervest (Pratt again) who warns that the Queen will bring about “Armamageddon.”

General Mayhem is bringing...you guessed it...da noise.  General Mayhem
is bring da noise.  Did you think she was bring mayhem?

The Lego Movie 2 brings in all the fun elements of the first one and is able to also deliver a story that feels fresh and like it is expanding the universe that was established in the first film rather than feel like just a sequel and like another adventure with the characters we know and love.  The animation looks absolutely terrific again, the humor is something that the whole family can enjoy and the tale explores concept and themes that anyone, no matter their age, can identify with.

I'll be honest, I'm fairly tempted to change my name to Rex Dangervest.

This time around, the story explores the themes of growing up and does so excellently through Emmet’s journey to save his friends with Rex and through what is occurring in the “real world” when it concerns the LEGO items being played with by Finn (Jadon Sand) and Bianca (Brooklynn Prince)—the children of the LEGO collector from the first film (played by Will Ferrell).  On one hand you have Lucy wishing that Emmett would stop being so child-like in his ways and Rex showing him how to be a tough guy and, on the other, you have an older brother wishing his sister wouldn’t play with the LEGO sets like such a kid.  One of the reasons I love the first film so much was how the real world play had an impact on the story the characters were going through and how it acted as a lens to a child’s imagination and they repeat this on an even greater level in this film as we get to see through this lens from both the younger, more idealistic Bianca’s eye and through a growing boy who is starting to mature.  It's this path of exploring growing up that helps keep this story feeling unique and original.

Fun Fact:  One of my alarms to wake up to is "Everything Is Awesome."

Like the previous film, the voice cast is fantastic.  It has the returning favorites like Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman and Charlie Day but the new characters are brought to life terrifically by Stephanie Beatriz and Tiffany Haddish.  Haddish really captured the ambiguous and fluid nature of Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi and was just hysterical in her delivery.

Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi is just a collection of bricks that can turn into
anything she wants and I just got her name.

I didn’t really see any drawbacks to The Lego Movie 2:  The Second One.  On the surface, it stinks that Unikitty, Benny and MetalBeard have significantly less screen time than the first one but with the new characters, new adventure, the surprises and twists and the overall fun designs that we see in the new “worlds” the characters visit, this minor complaint proves to be nothing.  Overall, the film is a lot of fun and although it isn’t as spectacular as the first one it still is a great ride.  Heck, even comparing the two seems a tad unfair because the first one was such a unique experience in the world of animated features but, even with that comparison, I still really enjoyed this second trip in the world of The Lego Movie.
