Godzilla: King of the Monsters – 5 out of 5
I really enjoyed the 2014 Godzilla film and its companion in the new monsterverse; Kong: Skull Island. I’ve never been the biggest fan of either of the immense beasts (I’ve seen all their films but I never really crossed into their fandom) but these features really resonated with me. I was pretty excited to see that the massive radioactive creature was back and it was all-out war against some other kaiju in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Also, this type of loud, blockbuster summer spectacular is something made to be seen in the theater so I went and saw it and found it to be a lot of fun.

Now imagine Eleven fighting the monsters... |
It’s been several years since Godzilla made himself known to the world and the secret organization Monarch has revealed that he wasn’t the only Titan to exist. Within the organization, Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) has developed a device called the Orca and it can replicate the Titans’ calls and be used to either calm them to the point of docility or enrage them to the point of danger. While on site for the Titan Mothra, Russell and her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) are kidnapped by the eco terrorist Jonah Alan (Charles Dance) and he plans on using the device to wake up the Titans and used them to usher in mankind’s extinction. Monarch scientists; Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), Dr. Ilene Chen (Ziyi Zhang), Dr. Rick Stanton (Bradley Whitford) and Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins), enlists the help of Russell’s ex-husband Mark (Kyle Chandler) in order to help find her but soon learns that she is working with Alan and helps awaken one of the worst and most powerful Titans on the planet; King Ghidorah. Now Monarch must somehow guide Godzilla towards the fight for the planet’s future and hope that the monster is here to protect the planet and the human race rather than see its eradication.

Hmmm...there's some sort of message being conveyed here but I can't quite
figure out what it is trying to say. |
When I sit down for kaiju-enriched films such as this, my expectations are lots of destruction and monster mayhem. If it gives me that then I am a happy camper. For the most part, that is all King of the Monsters is: monsters fighting each other and destroying everything that is around them. This is honestly when the film is at its best. It proves to be incredibly fun and exciting. The only time this film is flopping is when it tries to explore human drama.

"Let's kill Godzilla with a crossbow while he's on the can." |
I don’t watch these films for intricate exploration of human emotion and character-based drama so I’m not judging this one too harshly when it doesn’t deliver this very well. There is some character work that I felt was undeniably successful like the tension they were feeling during the action sequences or the fear they were experiencing when everything is starting to go down but when the story tries to tackle smaller, more intimate explorations of the human condition in such a situation and how it plays on their relationships it sorta falls apart; for example, the family drama with the Russells and the aftermath of a character dying. These moments feel very sloppy and lack the impact they had the potential of having. I won’t argue that this stemmed from lazy writing but it definitely felt like the production was relying too heavily on the goodwill of the audience and them inherently caring for these characters that, sadly, don’t get the development they deserve and needed in order to form a decent bond with as a viewer.

I love Thomas Middleditch so the fact that he was in the cast made me very
happy. |
This drawback aside, I felt the film did everything it was meant to do very well. The special effects to create the kaijus looked amazing and I loved the modern day designs of these titanic legends. There were a lot of fun Easter Eggs and newly designed mythologies to these beasts that did a great job of honoring their history and origins. The cast is composed of some very exceptional performers who did a great job with their parts. The story is beyond functional and did a great job of setting up this monster battle royal and provided motivations for this rumble in a way that didn’t feel silly or like it was jumping through impossible hoops for it to make sense and, most importantly, the action in this one is killer and very exciting.

Not to give out any Spoilers but they had a fun nod-and-wink to
Mothra in the film that I found quite amusing. |

Come on, Rodan. You need to leave the nest at
some point. |
The monster fights in this film are big, loud and just an absolute smorgasbord of mayhem and destruction. They were so much fun and I was incredibly impressed with how they were able to seamlessly incorporate the human characters within them and do so in a way that kept the tensions high. For example, when Rodan is unleashed there is a wicked sequence where Monarch is baiting the kaiju to follow them towards Ghidorah’s location and the way the story would cut from Rodan taking out the pursuing fighter jets to the Monarch crew counting down the seconds to contact and all the destruction that was left behind in the monster’s wake was unbelievably put together and made for a sequence that was tense but super fun to experience. This sequence wasn’t an isolated incident either within the film as I feel that all the film’s action moments were incredibly crafted and really made this film shine and even outdo what came before in 2014.

Godzilla is standing still because he doesn't want the humans to see him.
He thinks man's vision is based on movement. |
Godzilla: King of the Monsters falters badly when it tries to explore human connections but to be honest I’m not seeing this film for the human element. I wanna see giant monsters fighting each other and destroying shit. It’s in this aspect that the film is very successful and very entertaining. Overall, it’s doing a tremendous job at what it is setting out to be and it is doing a great job at building this new monsterverse and has me very exciting for the next film where Godzilla takes on King Kong…and maybe a future film where Pacific Rim crosses over? Hint hint.
