Sicario 2: Electric Boogaloo
Sicario: Day of the Soldado – 4 out of 5
I really enjoyed the first Sicario film. Benicio Del Toro has this badass quality that is both enhanced and completely undone by this unnerving and cold persona he carries in his character--and by undone, I mean that he just comes off as intimidating and outright scary at times. Add in a great performance from Emily Blunt and a very suspenseful and chilling atmosphere and it made for a very remarkable film. Now, it’s not really the type of feature I would have thought needed a sequel but Sicario: Day of the Soldado arrived and showed that Del Toro’s character has other stories that need to be shown…

Looks like a men's wear catalog for doomsday preppers. |
After a suicide bombing kills fifteen people, including children, in Kansas City, the government decides that more extreme measures need to be taken when combating terrorism. Immediately after the event, CIA operative Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) learns that the bombers might have been smuggled into the country by Mexican drug cartels. It becomes decided that the Department of Defense would orchestrate a war between the cartels through a false flag operation. Gravers enlists black operative Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro) to assassinate one cartel’s lawyer and kidnap the daughter of the rival cartel—a daughter who just so happens to have a connection to Gillick’s tragic past. However, as the team is preparing to head back to The States the whole plan goes haywire and now it’s a fight for survival.

The first film had a mystery factor in its story as Emily Blunt’s character is thrown into a mission she knows nothing about with a group she doesn’t fully understand and having a man who is nothing but a question mark. This sequel feels much more straight-forward with its story and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. While the CIA’s plan may be constructed around deception, what you see is what you get in this second outing for Gillick and this allows for some very brutal moments of action,
incredibly tense moments and some very chilling exploration of character.

Strike a gun-toting pose. |
The story in this feature starts with a bang—pun not intended as the film starts with a suicide bombing. This sequence is absolutely shocking and really sets the stakes for the film as it looks at this tragedy with an unflinching eye. After this terrifying moment, the story never lets go of the tension and horrors you are watching as both bad guys and good guys alike commit terrible acts. To put it lightly, this film is tense. Director Stefano Sollima expertly crafts scenes to be just soaked in dramatic and heightened tension and the film’s score only ups this factor. The tension was one of my favorite aspects of the first film and in this one it is relying heavily on that defining aspect and, in my opinion succeeding wildly with it. Hell, even the closing moments are incredibly suspenseful and tense.

Del Toro's intense face is some scary shit. |
The performances in this film are absolutely stellar and that really isn’t a shock when you take a look at the cast. Del Toro and Brolin are awesome to watch in their own right as they both know exactly how to play their characters. Del Toro is amazing as he plays Gillick as he is somehow terrifying, mysterious and badass all at the same time and Brolin’s cockiness is both amusing and authentic feeling. Supporting these two is a roster of very talented players like Jeffrey Donovan, Matthew Modine, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Catherine Keener but I really enjoyed the performances of Isabela Moner (who plays the daughter of the drug lord the CIA kidnaps) and Elijah Rodriguez (who plays a young man who gets involved in smuggling illegal immigrants over the border). Both these two were incredibly engaging to watch and to see their evolutions occur was very intriguing.

Josh Brolin has had so many iconic roles in his filmography that it is hard to
pick one to reference in this caption. You might just want to think up
your own. |
Sicario: Day of the Soldado feels different from the first film but not in a large or detracting way. It feels like a minor shift in focus but it still provided a very engaging and striking film with some tremendous performances. It’s a feature that starts with a very shocking moment and ends in a very chilling way that leaves an impression as the credits played. Some critics didn’t care for this second outing of Gillick’s character but I found it just as engrossing as the first film.
