For those of you who have or have not heard of his name, it is with deep sadness that I announce that Richard Williams has died of cancer on August 16th 2019 at the age of 86. Williams was a Canadian born animator who was famous for animating 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' as well as 'The Pink Panther'. He was also known for his unfinished animated masterpiece 'The Thief and the Cobbler'. Unfortunately, this piece ended up having a turbulent history because it was independently-funded, the film was taken away from Williams and is finished and later re-edited by its two distributors. It was later recovered from its obscurity by a fan named Garrett Gilchrist who produced a fan-restoration of William's version entitled 'The Recobbled Cut'. This is compiled from previous versions of the film and is supported by numerous people including those who have worked on the unfinished project. This fan-edit plays a huge part in restoring 'The Thief and the Cobbler' back to the way the creator had intended to be. It is available to watch on YouTube. In 2013, Williams even released a rough cut of his movie which was then called 'A Moment in Time' and was screened in Los Angeles with
Williams began his animating career when working on television commercials and made his self-financed short film 'The Little Island' in 1958 which earned him a BAFTA award. He then started animating title sequences for various movies, two of these animations ended up in 'The Pink Panther' movies from director Blake Edwards. (Wikipedia)
In 1971, Williams directed the animated short 'A Christmas Carol' which won him an Academy Award. He also directed a full-length animated feature 'Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure' as well as the Emmy-award winning TV animated movie 'Ziggy's Gift'. Williams' proudest accomplishment was the animation he had done on 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' and it earned him two Oscars. In 2002, Williams wrote and published his animation how-to book 'The Animator’s Survival Kit'. He even made two short animations prior to his death including 'Circus Drawings' and 'Prologue'. We've lost an unsung legend, but his legacy will never be forgotten. Here are the clips from his films that contained his amazing and sometimes surrealistic animation.
