The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run – 4 out of 5
I’m almost 40 years old (at the time of typing this) and I still watch SpongeBob SquarePants. I love the characters and find the humor to be consistently laugh out loud hysterical. When it was announced that a new film was coming out, I was super excited. Every film they’ve released has been terrific in my opinion, so I had no doubts that The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run was going to be a lot of fun. Heck, the trailer shows that Keanu Reeves was in it, so it had a lot going for it. Sadly, the pandemic caused some delays with this one, but I got a chance to check it out and, as predicted, I loved it!

Let's be honest, we can all relate to Squidward on some level. |
Everything is going fine in Bikini Bottom until Gary, the snail pet of SpongeBob (Tom Kenny), is kidnapped by Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) and given to King Poseidon (Matt Berry). Poseidon needs the snail for his skin care regiment and Plankton hopes that getting SpongeBob out of the area will allow him to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula from Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown). However, after SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) head out on a journey to rescue Gary—guided by a tumbleweed named Sage (Keanu Reeves)—they are caught by Poseidon. Now SpongeBob’s friend Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence), his neighbor and coworker Squidward Tentacles (Rodger Bumpass), his boss Mr. Krabs, and the man who caused all of this; Plankton, are out to rescue the two and help them get Gary back.

Sponge on the Run doesn’t mess with the formula too badly and it ends up with another very entertaining SpongeBob adventure. Essentially, the film feels like just another episode but only longer, on a bigger scale, and with some higher production value. It isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel or do anything that would make this feel unlike a SpongeBob property. Like the show, it has laugh out loud humor, wild antics, and a tone that blends the laughs with that trademark underlying SpongeBob sweetness. There are also some great guest appearances like the show, and it also brings in a new style of animation that really works.

2020 kinda feels like the year that Plankton will finally get the Krabby Patty secret formula. |
SpongeBob isn’t a stranger to animation that ventures away from its usual, two-dimensional style. The character isn’t a stranger either to integrating live action. Sponge on the Run is presented in a three-dimensional style and we get to see in the real world and interact with performers like Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg, and Danny Trejo. The animation in this one is killer. I absolutely loved the 3D look (in my review of the last film, I actually said I would watch an entire movie of SpongeBob in a 3D style and here we are!). It reminded me very much of the stop-motion holiday special that the series did in the past, but it also just looked amazing and gave the characters and Bikini Bottom a fresh and fun new look. It also had this amazing level of detail as you see even the characters’ skins and location surfaces have dimension and character to them.

We are living in the Golden Age of Reeves and I hope it never ends. |

Matt Berry was in the last film and I was happy to see him play a new character in this one. Just put Berry in everything, I say. |
No surprise, the cast is great in the film. Tom Kenny and the crew from the show continue to keep the quality high and easily assists in getting you sucked into the wacky world of Bikini Bottom. Newer characters are voiced by some very talented people I enjoy like Matt Berry (seriously, that man is a treasure), Awkwafina, Tiffany Haddish, and Reggie Watts. All of them are a lot of fun as their characters and really fit in with the cartoon’s world. Finally, the live-action characters played by Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg and Danny Trejo, are a tremendous addition to it all. I really enjoyed Keanu Reeves as Sage and seeing Trejo show up is just entertaining as heck. Who doesn’t love Trejo?

Seriously, who doesn't love Trejo? I don't want to meet those people. |
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is a really fun new adventure with SpongeBob and his friends. The story is simple but fits in well with the world of these undersea creatures, the product is incredibly funny, the animation looks amazing, the voice cast is great, and the live-action actors are a lot of fun. It’s just another really amusing and really entertaining adventure with the sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea.
